An arrest warrant for Terrell Owens was issued because of missing child support payments, reports the Huffington Post.
Terrell Owens's -- also known as "T.O." -- previously had his child support case in Atlanta. It is now taking place in Contra Costa County in Northern California.
T.O., who has a five year old daughter with a woman named Melanie Paige Smith in Atlanta, was ordered to pay $5,000 a month in 2007, on an estimated yearly income of about $600,000, reported FindLaw's Atlanta Family Law News Blog. On the whole, Terrell Owens child support order was fulfilled -- until this past summer. At that point, T.O. allegedly did not make payments in June and July, which caused Melanie Paige Smith to threaten legal action. T.O. then paid back all his child support arrears before the court date.
Currently, T.O.'s problems began because he was looking for a new attorney and representing himself while trying to change the court date. Owens is seeking to get a child support modification. He plans to argue that his previous child support was based on the nearly $12 million a year he had been making in 2007, when he played for the Dallas Cowboys and was considered one of the top NFL wide-receivers. Currently he is a free-agent that has not been able to get interest from any of the teams in the league.
As most non-custodial parents are aware, it is difficult to make child support payments without a steady paycheck. In these kinds of situations -- which can even befall millionaires -- it is good policy to act quickly and seek out an attorney experienced in engaging in child support modifications. One important element of adjusting child support, is to continue paying as much as you can in the meantime, so you can show the court that you tried to make an effort.
